Stuff I bought/read this week (5/2)

Here, forum users are encouraged to post a list of the comics they read is week, and rank them accordingly, with best on top, worst on bottom, with optional footnotes of anything they though about the issues.

Week of 5/2

Dial H #1 (surprisingly good, actually. Very dark, and cra-azy cool artist.)

Invincible Iron Man #516 (I really like Inv. Iron Man in general. Start of a new arc, and, well, I can read it again now that goddamn Fear Itself is finally over.)

X-O Manowar #1 (it was alright, but I felt like the LCS talked me into it pretty heavy for something that involves Visigoths kidnapped by aliens and another suit of pseudo Iron Man armor. Even in description, I don't get why I wasn't a bigger fan of this based on its description. Slow out of the gate, but did have some impressive art.)

Earth 2 #1 (s'alright. Decent enough art. Story seemed neat but i felt unsure of where it was all headed to. Jay Garrick's former girlfriend is kind of a bitch, which I can identify with.)

Stormwatch #9 (Only thing I liked is the suggestion that two former members of Stormwatch are back next issue. No idea why the red lantern corps was even involved. Weird seeing so much DC getting mixed in with the authority...but...it's just going to be that way from hereonout, I guess.)

Laura, there's a Terry Moore "How to draw facial expressions" book that came out not too long ago that I really wanna check out. I've never checked out strangers in paradise, but the work he's put into expression is absolutely amazing. I dunno if you've seen it or picked it up.Fury Max #1 (should have been called Garth Ennis presents, Nick Fury stands around and uses the F-word in perpetual conversations in1954.)

AvX round 3 (How can so many talented writers be responsible for such a dumb and boring series so far? What in THE Hell provoked the cap and wolverine fight, exactly?)

I've been too swamped to read anything yet, but I'm glad you enjoyed "Dial H." That and Earth 2 are at the top of my pile. I'm still not sold on AvX as anything besides a cheap marketing ploy. Also, when there are more writers than members of the Wu Tang Clan, that's a recipe for disaster.

1. Y The Last Man - I just received the last 2 hardcovers in the series (4 and 5) in the mail and now I'm finding myself at that crossroads where you either plow through to the gloriously rewarding end or sit and marinate in the sweet embrace of excellent story telling and let every detail soak in. I'm a sucker for pop culture references and this book is filled with them, but handles them in a way that is smart and paced appropriately. Highest recommendation! Especially if you like post-apocalyptic, distopian, survival stories featuring a wise ass main character and his monkey.

2. Scott Pilgrim - VS. The World (book 2) - So i started picking these up after seeing the movie and loving it. I was hooked when in the first book, Scott goes to band practice and the page opens up to a two page spread of the band playing with the chords and lyrics tabbed out for the reader to play along! Genius! I wasn't sure how I'd feel about the black and white manga "esqe" art style but I found it to be a really fun read. The book also has a lot of differences from the movie... well at least as far as I can remember. Highly recommended, if you like video games, music, girls (but stress out about them), or know people who do.

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Ultimate Collection - I was sooooo excited when I saw this on the shelfs! I've been trying to amass a collection of these early issues ever since I got back into comics in 2001, but wanted to wait to get the whole story before diving in. I "acquired" a digital collection but never took the time to read them, idk, something just didn't feel right about it. So having this mammoth tome of original TMNT goodness in my hands... idk... I was just compelled by the universe to devour it. Did I mention it's huge! The art is beautiful! And a major selling point for me was that at the end of each issue Eastman and Laird provide commentary!!!!! Throughly enjoyable read! If all your knowledge of the TMNT is from the 80's cartoon, do yourself a favor and check this book out (as well as the 2002 cartoon, as it's far superior to is predecessor!) But remember, this probably isn't the TMNT you remember. Highly recommended!

4. Animal Man #1 - All i knew of Buddy Baker, up to the new 52, was what little I remember from 52 the series. I loved how he was handled there and (so far) likewise here in this new world. The art is nice and appropriately off-putting. Out of the few new 52 issues I've read, this is the only one, single issue, that felt like I got my "money's" worth of story and art. I can't wait to catch up!

5. Aquaman #1-8 - I love how John's is handling this series. The snide remarks and general ignorance of AC and his character are pretty funny. I felt as tho the story itself was moving kinda slow. I like where it seems to be going but just wish we got more out of each issue. Also holding on to hope that they'll introduce the Aqualad from Young Justice into the series or just give AC his powers!
